Large structures like hydro and power plants and refineries fall under the Heavy Industrial construction sector and often occur in remote areas.

Large buildings like stadiums, hospitals, high rises, malls and museums fall under the Institutional and Commercial construction sector and generally occur in cities and urban areas.

Bridges, highways, pipelines and mass transit projects fall under the Engineering construction sector and can be located in cities and urban areas as well as in more remote areas.

Location

Indoors/Outdoors

Although many construction careers may operate mostly indoors or mostly outdoors, the task you’re working on ultimately determines where you’ll be working.

Tools and Equipment

Heavy equipment includes machinery like boom trucks, bulldozers, excavators, graders, cranes, tractors and backhoes.

Working with your hands and small tools generally involves working with power tools such as circular saws and drills and hand tools such as hammers and screwdrivers.

Travel

Working away from home means that you could be travelling 100 km or more one way to work, or sleeping over for one or more nights for work.

Working closer to home means that you’ll sleep in your own bed every night.
